Illinois State Rep. Tom Bennett is recovering in a Bloomington hospital after a serious car accident on March 7.
The Gibson City Republican, whose district includes parts of Ford, Woodford, Iroquois, Livingston, and Vermillion counties, reportedly broke 10 ribs—including six in multiple places—when his vehicle left the roadway on U.S. 24 in rural McLean County last Thursday night.
Bennett is being treated at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington and will hopefully be released this week. The Bloomington Police Department has not released any more information about the accident.
“Tom is known by his House Republican colleagues as one of the hardest working members of the House. In fact, after the accident he was most concerned about his legislative paperwork that was engulfed in flames. Please keep him in a your thoughts as he recovers,” read a brief release from the Illinois House Republicans.
Bennett was elected to his third term in the Illinois House last November. Before becoming a legislator, he was an IT manager at State Farm Insurance. He has also been a high school science teacher and a computer software developer.
